Blogging Analysis: How Sweet It Is

Hello friends,

I am relieved to say that I can finally be back to blogging, after a grueling 6 days without electricity, heat, or hot water. Though I was truly blessed to have loved ones to get me through it all, I cannot tell you how relieved I am to be returning to a normal week of classes, in an apartment with lights and hot showers.

For today’s post I plan to do a little blogging about blogging. This is partly required of my independent study, but I also think it’s a great way to look at food blogs to see what works and what doesn’t. There are so many new food blogs started every single day, and we could all, myself included, use as much help as we can get. What better way to learn than by checking out your favorite blogs?

Before I begin, let me just make a very important note:

I do not profess to own any of these photos, aside from the screenshots of How Sweet it Is. I obtained permission from the blog’s author to utilize her photos here on Feast with Me, and will cite each post the photos originate from. The analysis of the blog, however, is mine and copyright November 5 2012 by Jessica Gonzalez.

Okay so now to the fun part. If you remember, a few posts ago I discussed what I consider food porn to be, as inspirational and creative and a great resource for the food-obsessed.

May I present to you what I believe to be a prime example of food porn: How Sweet it Is.

So, in terms of style we have a clean, white, simple layout that really lets the food speak for itself.  It’s minimalist but not boring, because one comes for the food. There are little touches of color here and there to give it some life, and this simple layout makes it extremely easy to navigate.

I also adore her “Recipe Index” because it includes photos along with text links (you know, in case you forgot how mouthwatering something looked). Social Media Icons are also easy to find and have the simple look of being customized for the site.

But in terms of content, one can also come for the comfortable tone of the language that invites readers to pull up a chair and stay a while. Sarcasm and humor make Jessica relate-able and approachable. She does not come across as a staunch, strict, methodical person (cough cough Martha Stewart) but instead as someone who we could very easily see ourselves being neighbors, or more hopefully friends with. Seriously, who doesn’t wish they could have a bite of this?

Though one may argue that the level of professionalism in the photos is most certainly not attainable to the average cook, her recipes are. True, my attempt at her oatmeal chocolate chip cookie bread did not look anywhere near as mouthwatering as hers, but it tasted really freaking good. Her post got me into the kitchen and whipping up her recipe, which is the truly crucial sign of a successful food blog.

Whenever my friends ask me which food blogs I enjoy reading, I immediately blurt out “How Sweet It Is” because it truly is one of my favorite blogs. I aspire to engage readers the way Jessica does, to take photos like hers, and to have a site that is both professional and fun at the same time.

I also want to inspire others the way her blog inspires me. I have always been terrified of cooking, and once I took the plunge into the realm of savory, her recipes were not only what I craved, but what I thought I could manage. Nothing is so over-the-top difficult that I feel dissuaded from trying it in my own kitchen, and her writing style makes me feel like I am just talking with a fellow food-obsessed friend. She gets my obsession with brown butter (how could you not?) and knows how important it is to use good cheeses; it’s like she knows me.

Imagining that I may actually be able to sink my teeth into the food I am staring at on the screen gets me excited. Before I know it I am in the kitchen, engaging in the umpteenth battle with my weird gas stove, but ending with a delicious bowl of food that I can be proud to call my own.

I consider her blog to be an absolute reading requirement for anyone wanting to delve seriously into food blogging and food writing, or anyone who just really loves comfort food.

And, can you believe it, on Wednesday I will be sharing with you my own attempt at Jessica’s mind-blowing recipe for Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese, shown here:

And I can safely say that yes, it is absolutely, without a doubt, as delicious as it looks.

    You had me at “corn dip”! I actually saw that photo on FB and have been dreaming of it ever since….truly “food porn” at work! I have never visited her site but after reading this I checked her out. Beautiful photography that truly inspires me to get right into the kitchen. You are right, she has a way of keeping us interested and inspired but in a light, fun way! I am sti

        I’m so glad you enjoyed this post. I was a tad worried that this may not appeal to people as interesting, but just as one who wishes to be a great writer should READ great writers, one who wishes to be a great food blogger should analyze the great food bloggers out there. :)
