Homemade Naan Flatbread
Hello friends!
I hope the New Year is treating you well. After the insane sugar rush of December, I thought it’d be a good idea to do a tiny (only tiny!) detox day and switch to bread baking for today’s post.
Plus, I am literally so overjoyed that this recipe worked that I could shout it to the heavens right now.
NAAN CAN BE MADE AT HOME!! EASILY!! ALL THE TIME!
Exciting and dangerous at the same time isn’t it? Heehee I just love this Indian flatbread, and can never get enough when my boyfriend and I order Indian or head to a buffet. The idea that I can just whip it up, lickety split, is sort of mind boggling to me.
But it’s totally true. Just basic yeast starting:
Dough rising – only for an hour!
Then dividing, rolling…

a little frying and…

Naan!
This was so simple I managed to have these flatbreads ready to go with my Beef and Potato Curry all by 6pm the other night. And Joshua is usually pretty supportive of my baking endeavors, and emphatically states he had “no doubt” I could make naan, but seeing his face while he stared at the pile of naan was absolutely priceless.
My mom’s already dying to know how to make them, and I plan on trying them again with herbs and spices, and perhaps even a whole wheat version! Healthy Naan?! It’ll end up being all I ever eat.
Happy Baking!
Homemade Naan Flatbread
Via The Little Red House
2 tsp dry active yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1 tsp sugar
2 1/2 cups AP flour, plus more for rolling
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup canola oil
1/3 cup plain yogurt
1 egg
melted butter or oil for frying
1. Whisk together warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl. Let sit until foamy, about 10 minutes.
2. Add flour, salt, oil, yogurt, and egg to yeast mixture and stir until well combined and dough forms.
3. Knead dough until soft and pliable. Shape into ball and place back in bowl. Cover and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
4. Divide the dough into 6-8 equal piece and roll out on floured surface into thin circles or ovals.
5. Heat oil/butter in skillet (just a teensy bit! like a splash) and add one naan to the pan. Cook until blistered and golden, then flip and cook until other side is golden as well.
